Background
Information:
According to the American Speech and
Hearing Association (ASHA), “Augmentative and
Alternative Communication (AAC) includes
all forms of communication (other than oral speech) that
are used to express
thoughts, needs, and wants. We all use AAC when we make facial
expressions or gestures, use
symbols or pictures, or write.” Two million people in the
United States have a communication disorder that impairs their ability to
talk. (ASHA) Our goal is to
provide an Augmentative Alternative Communication system that
is affordable, reliable,
adaptable and convenient so as to empower the
language-impaired individual to communicate
in the world more effectively.
Who Benefits from
AAC?
AAC assists any person with severe speech
and language problems. This includes, but is not
limited to, people with cerebral palsy,
autism, traumatic brain injury, mental retardation,
ALS,
physical disabilities, stroke, spinal
cord injury, muscular dystrophy, and Huntington’s
disease.
What is Alexicom Tech’s
Mission?
To express one’s wants, needs,
preferences, opinions, and to interact socially is essential
to a
higher quality of life. The reduced cost
and increased versatility will provide more language-impaired
people with the opportunity
to express themselves.
What is Alexicom
Tech?
Alexicom Tech is an AAC, picture-based
system that is available via the internet. This
system can be accessed any place that the
internet is available. It is an internet-based
software
platform that allows people to use
developed communication boards or create their own boards. It
is paired with voice output
so that the user can communicate with family, friends,
classmates, and others. This
system can be used on virtually any computer, laptop, or other
internet-accessible device
so there is no need to purchase additional hardware or
software. With Alexicom Tech, what is being purchased is an account that you
can access from almost anywhere, at anytime. Once the pages
have been created they can
be saved on a computer to run off-line. Running off-line will
speed up its performance and
be available 24/7 regardless of internet access.
· No need to purchase a new device as the
user grows or needs
change.
· If you switch to a new internet
accessible device, Alexicom Tech moves with
you.
· Real images make choices clearer and
communication more
effective.
· It is affordable, and you can unsubscribe
at any time.
· The pages are easy to print, so your
communication board can go
anywhere.
· Accessible via desktop pc, laptop, umpc,
and other internet accessible
devices.
· Pages that are created can be saved on
your computer to be used
offline.
· Service may be covered by Arizona
Department of Developmental
Disabilities.
The members of Alexicom Tech include:
Dr. Karen Suhm, Marti Baio, Staci Neustadt,
Faridodin "Fredi" Lajvardi
Please contact Pamela Lajvardi for more information and/or a demonstration
of the system. Thanks!
